The Ministry of Education and Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi (the Wānanga) are considering legislative changes to better recognise:
The Ministry and the Wānanga have developed a shared proposal to create an enabling framework for the Wānanga sector in the Education and Training Act 2020 (E&T Act). This enabling framework would allow each Wānanga to work in collaboration with the Ministry to develop new rules in terms of who they are accountable to and how, their purpose and functions, and their governance structures.
Public consultation is now open, and we look forward to hearing your views.
This consultation seeks your feedback on four issues:
The Ministry of Education and Te Wānanga o Raukawa have also been working together on a proposal to reconstitute Te Wānanga o Raukawa as a new statutory entity under the proposed Wānanga sector framework (Option 2b). The proposal for reconstituting Te Wānanga o Raukawa is an individual expression of the kaupapa and aspirations of Te Wānanga o Raukawa, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
Public consultation is also open on the proposal to reconstitute Te Wānanga o Raukawa.
The Wānanga sector framework proposal is outlined in detail in our discussion document. We also have a summary of the Wānanga sector framework discussion document and an A3 overview document for this consultation process. A reo Māori summary of the discussion document will be available soon.
