We have extended the public engagement on two alternative options for NCEA Level 1 Science to 10 August 2020, in light of feedback we received since this new engagement process began last week. (https://consultation.education.govt.nz/ncea/options-for-ncea-l1-science/).

Note that the public engagement process for the Provisional Subject List is scheduled to close on 20 July 2020.

We encourage Subject Associations, teachers, students and the wider community to provide feedback on these two alternative options alongside the original proposal to have a single Science subject at NCEA Level 1.

The two alternative options were developed based on the education sector’s feedback earlier this year. Through our engagements with the Science community on Level 1 Science since 2019, it was clear that the sector did not want to retain the status quo with NCEA Level 1 having 31 achievement standards.

It is important that options meet the NCEA Change Package objectives that include making Level 1 a broader, foundational qualification and with more specialisation at Levels 2 and 3.

We will also be working with the New Zealand Association of Science Educators (NZASE) to hold discussions across the subjects and Subject Associations on the NCEA Level 1 Science options once teachers have had an opportunity to consider the options and share their views.

The outcome of the targeted consultation will inform any decision on the approach for Level 1 Science when we finalise the list of NCEA Level 1 subjects.
