In January 2018, the Minister of Education, Hon Chris Hipkins, appointed a 7‑member Ministerial Advisory Group to identify opportunities for strengthening NCEA. The Minister picked people from a range of different backgrounds and challenged them to look for opportunities that would provoke, inspire, and encourage kōrero around the future of NCEA.

Ministerial Advisory Group members

The Ministerial Advisory Group led the development of the Discussion Documents, that proposed six Big Opportunities. These Big Opportunities form the starting point for public engagement. During this phase, the Ministry of Education also formed an NCEA Review Reference Group, made up of key stakeholders to provide input and insights into the Discussion Documents. 

The NCEA Discussion Document is in three parts:

  • Big Opportunities
  • Te Arotakenga NCEA Ākonga Māori
  • Background to the NCEA Review.

Professional Advisory Group

In August 2018, the Minister of Education announced a 10 member Professional Advisory Group to work alongside the Ministerial Advisory Group to provide advice to the Minister and the Ministry of Education on the NCEA review. The Professional Advisory Group is composed of current and former principals and teachers with extensive experience working with NCEA in a range of schools and kura.

Public engagement now closed

The 19 October 2018 marked the end of the public engagement phase of the NCEA Review. Insights that come through from this feedback show definite areas where NCEA could be strengthened. Similarly we saw a diverse range of ideas about how we could do this, and what a more future-focused NCEA might look like.
