Minimising food-related choking risks in Early Learning Services

Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of children. While children can choke at any age, children aged five years and under are at a higher risk, as they have small air and food passages and are developing their biting, chewing and food-grinding skills.

That is why the Ministry is proposing to amend the licensing and certification criteria to minimise the risk of young children choking on food, by requiring early learning services to follow Ministry of Health guidance in the preparation and serving of food.
